It’s not a secret that IT professional are payed well, but does it really worth to study? This question may especially worry parents who whats their children to reach success.
I’m in IT for 15 years already and I remember hardware and technologies which was popular more than 10 years ago. Some of them are still in use, but most of have changed so much that I need additional research to stay up-to-date. Besides every several years the-next-big-thing happens just because technology world becomes able for such a jump.
In this situation it’s important not just to get an education, but also to be ready to learn continuously. Recently I had a conversation with a trainer who is teaching people who decided to give a try to become a programmer. His specialization is people who already have a profession, but wants to make a switch or upgrade. Based on his observations, only 30% of his students find job and stay in IT industry for a sufficient period of time. And up to 40% of students give up learning and even don’t get a diploma.
The good news are that for younger people studying is not such a big deal. May be just because they don’t have so much choice.
