MDM means Mater Data Management. Typically it is used for enterprise application integration. Most common use-case is building report which includes data from two or more different business applications. Let’s address to a particular example:
Let’s say we have an online store and the running company outsource delivery of orders to several different logistic subcontractors. Each subcontractor may have a unique software for tracking such a parcels. And each of these apps may have unique set of shipment statuses. They may look like ones at the screenshots below:
Sometimes labels for the same entities in different business apps may be listed even in different languages. In such a situations it does not make sense to build consolidated report using row data from both systems. And this is what MDM is for: it can recognize similar entities and assign canonical labels before include data into the report.
